Bob Izumi (Burlington, Ont.), Wayne Izumi (Burlington, Ont.) and Dave Mercer (Port Perry, Ont.), are just some of the field of 56 professional anglers that are competing for a purse of $130,000 this weekend in the inaugural Canadian Open of Fishing here in town.

The tournament’s professional field consists of 49 Canadians and seven Americans, including Marcia Rubin (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), the lone female angler to compete in the tournament. The professional angler who records the highest cumulative weight over the three-day event will receive a first-place prize of $25,000.

There are 56 amateur anglers participating.

Sarnia Sting forward Steven Stamkos won't be participating at Canada's World Junior development camp in Ottawa this weekend, as the highly-touted forward is taking part in a week-long rookie development camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning in Victoria beginning Monday.

The first overall by the Lightning in June, was a member of the Canadian team that won its fourth straight gold medal in the Czech Republic in January. The Sarnia Sting forward is expected to be penciled into the lineup when the Lightning begin the regular season in October.

Forty-four junior-aged players will be in Ottawa for the four-day camp, which begins on Saturday.
